525,600 Minutes... How Do You Measure a Year in the Life?

Just a year ago, I recall a conversation I had with my dad as I packed for my New Years holiday. With mugs of hazelnut coffee in our hands, we talked about how we suspected that 2011 was going to be a year of change. Change is a funny thing. Quite often, you can feel it coming from a mile away... but somehow it feels substantially different once it actually occurs. Sometimes change blindsides you in ways you never expect. In these moments, it's sink or swim. With arms flailing wildly in those first moments... you somehow manage to keep your head above water, even if just barely. But it's in answering those tough, hard-hitting questions of "What the hell did I get myself into?" and "What the fuck do I do now?" that we shape our lives.

2011 has been the most difficult, challenging and interesting year of my life. There have been many moments this year when I wondered how things could possibly get better. There were also moments of complete peace, wondering how it was humanly possible to be so happy. It's strange how certain memories resonate with quiet magic... ones that are seemingly uneventful, but feel so significant.

For me, one of these moments was shared on a sunny, warm afternoon this summer, walking through the grass barefoot. I remember the feeling of sheer, simple happiness of just being with someone I care about, wishing that moment could linger on forever. I felt the same way several days ago when I met my baby niece, Zadie, with her little fingers grasping mine. There is something to be said of how incredible it is to have such immediate love for this tiny little person. These are the special moments you look back on and think, wow... THIS is what life is about.

2011 was a year of transition, taking big steps when I graduated and began my career. After nearly four years as a preschool teacher whilst in college, I found myself in an entirely new stage of life. The funny part of all of this? My "babies" were the ones that truly prepared me for this transition, more so than any college course or book I've read. They taught me that it's okay to cry when you fall down, because you're a little stronger every time you get back up. I learned the value in asking questions... and lots of them. They demonstrated that, more often than not, you must try (and try again) until you get it right. And most importantly, my students showed me I should never lose my "sparkle."

I was so blessed to have traveled this year, ringing in the new year at a swanky masquerade in Chicago. I spent my 23rd birthday relaxing on a gorgeous beach in Key Biscayne, dining and shopping in Miami Beach. I went on an unforgettable journey that lead me across the country in a roadtrip with CCB. It was the most crazy, last-minute decision I've ever made... but it's also one of the most worthwhile experiences I've ever had. I've experienced the flashing lights of Las Vegas, the urban grittiness of Los Angeles and the beauty of southern Californian beaches. I spent an unexpected fall day on my own in New York City, trekking through Central Park in my favorite boots and Starbucks drink in hand. In that moment, I felt more independent and comfortable in my own skin than ever.

If there is anything to be said about my year, I challenged myself and faced my greatest fears head-on. Life is about making the choice to build a meaningful existence; to stand for something larger than yourself. To evolve with total passion... even when you feel like you're being pulled in a million directions that don't make sense. It's about surrounding yourself with loved ones that bring out the best in you, who cheer you on in the best and worst of times. It's knowing that we are never alone in this crazy life... because it sure is a beautiful, spectacular ride.

I wish you shelter from the storm
A cozy fire to keep you warm
But most of all, when snowflakes fall
I wish you love

Hey There

It's been an incredibly busy and chaotic time for me lately, so I apologize for the lack of recent posts. I'm on a nine-day break from work right now (the first time I've had over an entire week off in a year!), so my days have been booked solid with errands and visiting. Lots of reviews to come!

MAC and Oribe Haul

I'm not sure if it's a blessing or a curse that I work ten minutes away from Saks, Neiman's, MAC and Sephora... but I've gotten awfully efficient of making the most out of my lunch break lately. ;)

My most recent trip includes a mini-haul at MAC, which was actually more of a replenishment of several of my favorite products.

Strobe Cream: As mentioned in my YouTube videos, I can't do without my Strobe Cream. It's actually intended a moisturizer, but I like to mix it in with my foundation or use it as a highlighter for a dewy finish. I don't remember to use this everyday, but when I do, I always get compliments on looking glowy.

Plushglass in Ample Pink: This is a neutral pinky gloss that I just recently rediscovered in my collection, and I've used it so much in the past month that I had to purchase another. It's the perfect gloss to either layer over lipstains or use on its own. With a slight tingle, it definitely makes lips appear a little more lush. Love.

Makeup Removing Wipes: At the risk of sounding like a soccer mom, anyone that knows me well will know that my car is definitely a stash for essentials (including Johnson's baby wipes). While I swear by the baby wipes for everything (Starbucks spills, wiping down Hunter's paws, quick makeup removing, etc.), they aren't a substitute for MAC's facial wipes. These are excellent for taking off stubborn mascara/liner and leave your skin so soft, which is why they are a mainstay on my vanity.

Can I also just say how much I love Oribe? While they are absolutely the most ridiculously priced hair products I've ever encountered, Oribe delivers serious results. The combination of the Moisture & Control shampoo and the Brilliance & Shine conditioner left me with the softest, most incredible smelling hair ever. The Apres Beach Wave & Shine Spray is perfect for helping me get tousled, natural waves, which I then perfect with a large barreled clampless iron. Unlike the salty Bumble & Bumble Beach Spray, this spray keeps your hair soft and moisturized while still giving you piecey, natural waves. Oh, and did I mention that these products smell incredible? ;)

Music Monday (+ Outtakes)

Shakira's "Gypsy"

Also, since I haven't done a Youtube video in awhile, here's a little outtakes video I put together until I get an actual tutorial/haul up. Absolutely ridiculous, but it was entertaining looking back on some of my less-than graceful and articulate moments. C'est la vie.

Namaste

I was once told by my stepmom that my gift is being able to find the beauty in just about everything, whether it be in the form of a pair of Choos or a pile of oranges at Whole Foods. ;) Even in the worst of times, I can typically find something that is beautiful. But to be totally honest, I'm having a really difficult time finding goodness right now, despite this being the "most wonderful time of the year."

That being said, I'm making an honest effort to look deeply into myself for beauty right now. For a very, very long time, I have focused on others and external things to care for, often neglecting myself in the process. While it wouldn't appear that way in a physical or material sense (I certainly more than provide for myself in that manner), my heart has been aching. I have a great capacity to love others, but to love myself? Not so easy.

My yoga instructor said something so simple yesterday, and yet so profound. Before you take on the weight of the world, you must strengthen your own back (literally and figuratively). In yoga, "namaste" is a term used to acknowledge the soul and goodness of another person... the light within someone else, and the light within yourself. I have been incredibly lucky to have seen the light in another person. That has been an absolute gift to me, one that I am grateful for. But like my twinnn has said numerous times, it is essential that I find the light in Taylor.

I'm the type of person that always has a philosophy on life... about why things happen the way they do, about what the next logical step should be. Well, I don't have an answer this time. I cannot understand why things have happened. I don't know what is to come next. I'm sad and I'm very, very hurt. But I do hold these truths to be self-evident: I have shown love to another human being with complete vulnerability and honesty. I have laughed. I have cried. And I will continue to show love to this world, even when I feel that there is little reason to.

I spent this weekend surrounded by close family, without makeup, wearing sweats, watching old movies. I ran six miles. I took a Vinyasa class. I tried to focus on me, but I don't know when I'll feel better. I'd be lying if I posted one of my typical "Taylorism" bullshit lines, because I don't know what I believe in right now. For now, all I can do is take my life day by day. Pray that I will be happy again. It might not be today. It might not be tomorrow. But someday. Because like I've always maintained, life is too short to be anything but happy.

What I'm Loving Right Now...

Now that truly chilly weather has crept its way into December, I love breaking in all of my favorite loungewear. I've been pairing skinny leggings or yoga pants (Aerie makes my favorites) with my favorite James Perse tanks and Splendid tunics. Paired with some H&M knee-highs, it's a cozy look that's easily layerable.

Dior's Addict Lipstick in Tulle (#214) absolutely changed my mind about lipstick with its glossy finish. While Dior describes it as a light beige, I think a nude salmon is a bit more accurate... nevertheless, it's so naturally gorgeous. (Side note: who wouldn't love reaching for this pretty iridescent tube out of their bag?)

I Was Here

This song pretty much sums up how I aspire to live my life. I'm not perfect, I may not always get it right (and usually don't)... but I fully believe that life is too short to be anything but happy.

xx

I wanna leave my footprints on the sands of time
Know there was something that I left behind
When I leave this world, I'll leave no regrets
Leave something to remember, so they won't forget
I was here

I lived, I loved, I was here
I did, I've done, everything that I wanted
And it was more than I thought it would be
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I was here

I want to say I lived each day, until I die
And know that I meant something in, somebody's life
The hearts I have touched, will be the proof that I leave
That I made a difference, and this world will see
I was here

I just want them to know
That I gave my all, did my best
Brought someone to happiness
Left this world a little better just because
I was here

Retail Haul: Hits & Misses

Voluspa's Macaron Candle ($32 at specialty boutiques, 12 oz.)
I go a little crazy for blankets and candles this time of year... I can never get enough of cozy. This gorgeous, clean-burning Voluspa candle is absolutely no exception. Reminiscent of French macarons (with notes of vanilla and powdered sugar), this one is sweetly fragrant but not cloying. Think sexy, grown-up sweet... not saccharine, a la Aquolina Pink Sugar.

Kiehl's Rosa Arctica ($60 at Saks, 1.7 oz.)
With the combination of chilly weather, Retin-A, and the end of a cold, my skin became a dry, peeling mess this weekend. My old standby of Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream just wasn't cutting it anymore. Having used samples before, I knew Rosa Arctica (similar in consistency to La Mer) was my only saving grace. I purchased it on Saturday afternoon, and by this morning, my skin was back to normal. How's that for effectiveness?! It's actually marketed as an anti-aging cream, claiming to help smooth and firm the skin. While I'm not in need of anti-aging treatments, I love how densely hydrating it is. A tiny bit goes a long way.

YSL Faux Cils Shocking Mascara ($30 at Sephora)
Ughh. I really wanted to like this mascara, but like the original Faux Cils by YSL, the Shocking is a clumpy, icky mess. The wand isn't anything special; if anything, it's just a magnet for tangles. The formula isn't workable, and immediately starts to set the moment it hits your lashes. Buy this if you want spikey, sticky lashes. I think I'll pass, thankyouverymuch. ;)

Bumble and Bumble's Creme de Coco Shampoo & Conditioner ($22 for each, 8 oz.)
I'm selective about nearly everything I use, but hair care is especially important just because I have such a massive amount of hair. Creme de Coco smells great, and claims to be moisturizing. HA. That's a joke. I might as well have used hand soap on my hair, because these two products did absolutely nothing. Back to Victoria's Secret (So Sexy) and Oribe (Brilliance & Shine).

Celebrity Beauty Inspiration

While I love fashion, part of the reason I've always loved magazines so much is just the sheer fact that I can get beauty/hair inspiration. These are the specific looks I've been inspired by lately, although Kim Kardashian and Penelope Cruz have been examples that I've looked to for the past few years.

It's Music Monday, so here's an old favorite by Maroon Five that I still love.

Sunday morning, rain is falling
Steal some covers, share some skin
Clouds are shrouding us in moments unforgettable
You twist to fit the mold that I am in

Have a great Monday, dolls.
