May Update

May has been a very special month. Between an impromptu trip to southern California and a great little birthday surrounded by loved ones, life has been so sweet. I'm a lucky girl.

On the beauty end, my hair is longer than its ever been in my life, but I just added a few layers that also double as side-swept bangs. After taking over a year to grow out my blunt bangs, I was a bit nervous to cut anything at all, but I'm happy I did. A little spring update is always a good thing! :)

Music Monday (April 2013 Playlist)

So many amazing tracks out right now. Between EOTS, Daft Punk, MGMT, and Drake, April has been amazing month for new music. I'm one of those girls that cannot function without a soundtrack to my everyday life, so I'm excited to have lots of new material to keep me inspired as I work and play.

Have an amazing week... make it count!

A Tribute to One of the Last Ladies

"A beautiful lady is an accident of nature. A beautiful old lady is a work of art."

God has a random, ironic way of putting in front of you what's important in the most unexpected ways. Late on Thursday night, I decided to paint "designer" Easter eggs (suprise suprise... Comme des Garçons or Chanel, anyone? haha). As I pulled the eggs from the fridge, I had to think for a second how you're even supposed to make them. Realizing you have to boil the eggs first, I had a little moment. "I can do that," I thought to myself, literally laughing aloud for a sec. Of course I can... my grandma taught me how.

Instantly, I was brought back to my grandma's house. I was ten years old, standing barefoot and leggy in her kitchen. As my grandma prepared my grandpa and I breakfast on that sunny summer morning, she informed me that "Every girl needs to know how to make the perfect egg." I laughed and rolled my eyes, thinking she was crazy. As much of a girly girl as I was, I definitely didn't care if I knew how to boil an egg (much less cook). Despite my protest, my grandma taught me how to boil an egg that morning. And scramble them. And make them sunny-side up. "One day, when you're all grown up... you're going to thank me. Trust me, every woman needs to know how to boil an egg."

Standing in my kitchen (still leggy and barefoot), making my very first batch of Easter eggs in my first place, I had to take a minute to mentally thank my grandma. Not just for the cooking lesson; of course. It runs so much deeper than that. I am thankful for all of the life lessons she has given me. It's bittersweet writing this, because she's still around... she's just been in end-of-life hospice (actually since the day Felipe passed away in January). I haven't been able to bring myself to visit her as much as I'd like, because to be honest, it's just been too painful. The thought of losing someone else close again kills me. She isn't herself anymore... and that really hurts.

I want to take a moment to pay tribute to my grandma, before she's gone. I've told her how much I love her, but there's so much more I need to say. I want to thank her... for keeping my mom's memory alive for me. For telling me endless stories about my mom that I can someday pass on to my own children. For having tea parties with me when I was a little girl, always letting me use her finest china sets and expensive teas. For all the times she let me play with her makeup, before I was old enough to have my own. For teaching me about beauty- the important inner kind- before there was a "Beauty With A Bow." For showing me what a beautiful, healthy marriage is supposed to be, and for loving my grandpa as openly and affectionately as she did. For showing me how love can transcend time, space, and even death. For all the times she made me go with her to Catholic mass, despite my protests. For making me wear dresses constantly, to the point where that's all I want to wear now. For being a wonderful mother and grandmother to a huge family, but always managing to make me feel special. For traveling the world and sharing her experiences with me, passing on wanderlust. For teaching me how to cook, for teaching me how to tie a bow, for teaching me how to tie a tie. For reminding me to say "please" and "thank you," for demonstrating graciousness and kindness.

For showing me how to act like a lady in a world that accepts and promotes less than lady-like behavior.

I am so much of who I am because of my grandmother's influence. This woman is someone I respect with all of my heart. I may not be able to come to terms with the fact that she will not be around much longer, but I do know how much she has touched my life... and somehow, some way I hope that I can touch others through the things she has taught me. That it will all come full circle.

I guess that's what life's about, isn't it?

Review: Chanel "Ligne Graphique" Liquid Eyeliner

My latest beauty obsession? Chanel's new liquid eyeliner, Ligne Graphique.

Back in high school, I was never a fan of eyeliner; perhaps because so many girls would heavily rim their entire eyes... which was a racoon-y look that kinda terrified me, to be totally honest. hah. So I stayed away from it for years, not having any idea of how to apply it... and not knowing how much I'd love it now.

Oddly enough, liquid eyeliner has actually become a staple in my daily beauty routine for the past couple years. It first began with Urban Decay's 24-7 liquid liner, then I moved onto NARS, and now Chanel. While liquid liner definitely requires a steady hand and a bit of trial and error, it can completely change the shape of your eyes. I'm a fan of the winged eye at the moment, going after the whole Italian bombshell/Sophia Loren sort of look.

As much as I loved Urban Decay and NARS, Chanel beats them by a mile. Ligne Graphique's noir formula is super black and densely pigmented, with a shiny finish that lasts all day. The brush tip is tiny and precise, which allows for a steady stroke that can get super close to the lashline. This makes it a bit more tricky because of the dip ink-style application, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty effortless. At $34, it's definitely one of the most expensive liquid liners on the market, but I feel like it's completely worth it because of the pigment and longevity. The packaging is sleek and pretty, just as you'd expect from any Chanel product. So happy with this product, and had to share!

Real

Found this quote from one of my favorite childhood books, "The Velveteen Rabbit." It so beautifully and symbolically conveys what my recent blog post was about.

Fight to be real, not perfect. Live it. Love it.

Random Obsessions: March Edition

I've been completely slacking on the fashion/beauty posts recently. Ooops! Apparently need to get better about that. I have a few fashion & beauty roundups for you in the coming weeks, but until then, I wanted to share a few things that I've been loving lately. Thanks so much for hanging tight!

Suede Pumps by Nicholas Kirkwood ($695 at Saks)
The perfect silhouette. As much as I love my red bottoms, Kirkwood might be giving Monsieur Louboutin a run for his money.

Vita Fede 24K Gold "Titan" Bracelet ($275 at KarenEgren.com)
I've been wearing my Titan bracelets like crazy this month. Since I'm very much into yellow gold, these bracelets layer perfectly with my more delicate pieces. Definitely into strong, angular shapes this season. Side note, we had these on the cover of Cosmo in January! Very, very exciting moment.

OPI "Lights of Emerald City" over "Funny Bunny"
(Get this mani done in Axxium, it will last you a good two weeks!)

Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum ($20.99 at Target)
Now that my hair is essentially Rapunzel-long (it's reached the small of my back!), I'm doing everything I can to keep the ends strong. This smooths, softens, and glosses. Use a dime-sized drop of the ends of your damp hair, and prepare to be amazed. (As added bonus, it makes your hair smell like green Jolly Ranchers. Who doesn't love that? HAH.)

"Poetic Justice" by Kendrick Lamar ft. Drake
"Living my life in the margin and that metaphor was proof I'm talking poetic justice, poetic justice"

Happy spring, loves!

Feel It All: My Journey to This Moment

Cozied up on my couch in leggings, my favorite candle burning on the coffee table, my little dog curled up beside my hip... and I can't feel anything but gratitude for the contentment I feel in this simple moment.

I've been doing a bit of reminiscing lately, saving old photos and videos to an external hard drive to make more room on my laptop. As I started going through them, I started to look at my life in a different way; a tapestry of sorts. Piecing the past few years together into a video journey, I found myself putting together so many significant life events... and how every action, every moment had a resulting event that ultimately has led me to this very moment.

It's funny how that happens. A few years ago, I felt nothing short of completely confused on how my life would turn out. But going through these pictures, I see a completely different story. They depicted a skinny, glowing girl that seemingly had the world in the palm of her hand. A comfortable lifestyle, a boyfriend of many years, a degree in the works, nice vacations, a luxury car... looking at this person, I'm amazed at how pulled together I looked. "Wise beyond your years," they'd tell me. Little did anyone know, I was paralyzed by fear and pain.

They say that the loneliest moments can often be in a room full of people, and that describes the life I used to live. I always put on a shiny exterior, always afraid that people might know my secret that I wasn't anywhere near as happy as my Facebook profile might show. Bruises and sadness were well-hidden beneath the makeup and sparkle, and I was willing to go down kicking and screaming if it meant anyone knowing that my life wasn't flawless.

At some point, though, I remember thinking that I wanted my life to feel just as good on the inside as it appeared on the outside. I wanted my life to be genuine, to stand for something greater than myself, to prove to myself that I could do it on my own. I wanted to be in love with my life. It took a lot of courage, but I went after my passion, eliminated the negatives in my life, and worked my ass off. Though I had to pay my dues to get here, I am so grateful to be where I'm at now. I've experienced so much, I've traveled, I've met interesting people... I've created a life that reflects all that is important to me.

I'll be honest, though. The journey wasn't just full of magical moments, even though hindsight often provides heart-shaped glasses. I've had sleepless nights, I've had a couple miserable holidays, I've had my heart broken a few times. I've woken up completely sad, wondering what the hell I'd gotten myself into... wondering why I traded the easy life I used to have for THIS. I didn't always feel strong; in fact, I've often felt quite the opposite (especially when I moved out on my own). Needless to say, I was challenged. But in those moments, I'd tell myself to "feel it all," the good, the bad, the ugly... and know that the beauty and goodness in life will always prevail.

Moments like tonight remind me just how far I've come. It isn't conditional on what I own or what I do, but because I've come into my own and found strength. In giving to others, I've found myself. By creating, I've designed myself. I laugh more than anyone I know, and it's because I've surrounded myself with good people that are equally as passionate. I don't have a void to fill, I have nothing to prove. And oddly enough, I don't feel like I have to do everything on my own now... I'm leaving it up to God. He has brought the people and situations in my life that are supposed to be here at this very moment- and I trust in that with my whole heart; a heart that is stronger and more loving than ever.

My life is real and beautifully imperfect, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I wouldn't know the light without the dark, I wouldn't feel love if it weren't for the pain. I began the new year with a small tattoo on my rib that reads "feel it all," a reminder to embrace every moment that we are given. And with every moment, I will fight to my last breath do just that.

Yes, I'm Alive

I believe everything in our life- every person in our life, every relationship- everything is there for a reason. And when you really pay attention, there are certain little clues we get. It’s so crystal clear what the next step is… it’s just this puzzle, and everything is in its right place. And as we grow and take the next step, the dots get connected... and we eventually become who we are meant to be.

Do good, be kind, and do all things with love.

Not Goodbye, But See You Later

Yesterday, I said goodbye to my dear friend, Felipe, after his courageous battle with brain cancer.

I've written about him before; he inspired me in so many ways. Felipe was kind, vivacious, and a friend to so, so many. He was the one who would BBM me after a rough day. The one who would wrap me in a giant hug every time we met. Felipe lit up the room; I will miss his infectious laugh, his wide smile, he eternal optimism. He truly was one of a kind, and words can't quite describe just how precious of a friend he was to all of us. How lucky we were to share his magic for even just a few years.

A close mutual friend told me something this evening... one of the only things that has brought some comfort in the past few days. "Felipe will live on through us," he wrote. "Everything we do and accomplish will be his accomplishments too. He is a part of everything we do."

And from this point on, he will be.
